If you are reading this, you have been chosen by the leaders of this land to become a god, someone to help guide the people of these lands in their day to day life. This guide will help answer some of the most common questions you may have and hopefully will help you adjust to your new duties within the Far Shore. This has been written by those being employed as gods who have been in the same situation as yourself: we believe that being able to give you as much information as we are able will be helpful long term for when an issue arises.
What is a God?
Gods are born of wishes from mortals...or so what the native gods would tell you. However, we are brought from many different realms and worlds and suddenly placed into an assigned role. As gods, we are to mainly answer the prayers and requests of followers.
What exactly am I supposed to do as a god?
As gods, we are needed to help our followers in any possible way that we can. But we are not bound to it; as a god, we can choose whether the request or prayer truly needs our intervention. It is up to you in the end.
What is the difference between the Far Shore and the Near Shore?
The Far Shore is what we call the Heavens, where gods and their partners (or shinki as they are commonly called) reside. The Near Shore is where humanity stays and the more common place where ayakashi can be found. On occasion they have been known to come to the Far Shore but they are destroyed, driven away, or the portal whence they came is sealed off.
What is a shinki and why am I assigned one?
According to the Heavens, a shinki is a vessel that a god uses to help rend ayakashi and to help a god stay in balance. They are supposed to a god’s moral compass and to help them make productive choices. Of course, that is what everyone is told upon arrival. A shinki is someone who has died and is pulled from many different realms-even ones from a similar background of a newly stated god’s. While those of this world may state that they are be our ‘moral compass’, most of the gods that arrive were at one point human or someone who knows emotions and can understand the meanings of right and wrong: the idea is not much of a thought for newcomers or anyone not from this world.
What is The Gods’ Greatest Secret?
The shinki, as stated, are dead souls turned into vessels and weapons for gods. Because of this, they no longer remember their mortal lives. Being told of their mortal lives by anyone, god or shinki, causes the shinki to become an ayakashi. An incident months ago occured when someone had told a shinki crucial memories that they did not gain on their own made them become an ayakashi. The only way to handle a shinki that has turned into an ayakashi is to kill them.
There is an exception to this rule. Shortly after the new gods and their shinki began arriving in the Heavens, shinki began to remember things from their mortal lives or receive items from their homes (though any memories associated with the item may not arrive with it). These memories and items do not trigger blight and are safe to discuss.
Will We Always Be Gods and Shinki Remain Shinki?
Roles can shift: a god one day can become a shinki the next and the same with shinki becoming a god. There is no known cause to this phenomenon nor is there any signs prior to it occuring.
The Axel-Ayakashi Incident
Several months ago, a nora shinki named Axel managed to convince a god to break the taboo on telling shinki about their human lives. This was not the fault of Axel or the god in question; at the time we were not aware of what would happen if a god managed to break the taboo, just that it was a taboo for a reason. Upon hearing about his mortal life, Axel turned into an ayakashi and blighted every god who had named him, some to the point of near death. The ayakashi proceeded to rampage across the Far Shore, killing at least one shinki before being put to rest. It was after this incident that the older gods finally began to explain things to the new arrivals, though the onus is still largely on the older ‘new gods’ and shinki to make sure this does not happen again.
What is a Nora?
A nora is a shinki with more than one name/one god. To those of this world, it is taboo and looked down upon. However, to those newly arrived, as long as there is discussion about the potential dangers, it is rather common for a newly assigned shinki to have more than one god.
Blight
Blight is purplish red infections that appear on the skin and is very contagious. It can burn and harm gods, the pain going between a burn to agonizing. Blight can occurs in the following ways:
~When touching an ayakashi without protecting the skin
~When a shinki feels guilty about anything
Smaller cases of blight can be curable with holy water in the case of an ayakashi attack. When it comes to a shinki, the only course is to speak with them and solve the issue. Blight cannot be ignored and will only hurt the god further until they die. Therefore, it is your top priority if you are blighted to rid of it quickly. However, there are times where holy water and talks can go so far...
What is an Ablution?
Ablution is a procedure in which it is supposed to purify a blighted shinki on the verge of becoming an ayakashi. It is a preferred method to talk to your shinki before it reaches this point. However, if it fails, then an ablution is required. It takes the requirement of three or more shinki who have perfected their borderlines to cast the spell around the blighted shinki in which he or she are meant to confess to their guilt and sins. The god of the blighted shinki will become affected by this as well due to the connection they share with them and the process will be painful for both. The ablution can last from hours to a whole day depending on how stubborn the blighted shinki can be. Known shinki to have participated in an ablution before are: Kairi, Goten Son, and Chikusa Kakimoto.
