Character Information

Name: Aymeric de Borel
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon Point: End of Patch 3.3: Revenge of the Horde
Age: 32
History: Wiki Link

Personality:

”Do you know what sort of man becomes Lord Commander of the Temple Knights? One who comes from good stock. I did not, yet here I am. Now why do you suppose that is? Because I swiftly learned to tell the difference between words, deeds, and beliefs.”

To describe Aymeric de Borel, one must look at not only his position within his country’s government but also what he has accomplished along with the help of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, the Warrior of Light and his own merit. Sure it’s easy to group him in with most politicians but he holds traits that make him different from most of his peers in the Holy See. He holds the ideals of a knight, being kind and humble while being put in a position of leadership (and de facto leader later on followed by a Head of House position), and determined to make his country great while righting the wrongs it caused. But while he’s a good man, Aymeric does have a few flaws that makes some question his own safety. Mainly when he’s stubborn enough to go jumping in head first into trouble and getting hurt in the process…or others.

+Humbleness/Kindness:

When speaking to the Warrior of Light, he introduces himself as ‘Aymeric, commander of the Temple Knights’ instead of the proper titles using ‘Ser’ or ‘Lord Commander’. During the meetings with Alphinaud at Camp Dragonhead, he constantly sits so he can be at eye level with the Scions, he never chides Alphinaud despite him being so young nor does he try to make him feel like a fool. When he speaks to allies and friends, his voice is soft and while his clothes show him as a high ranking member, Aymeric’s actions tell another story. There are small things peppered in the game such as a gathering levequest in which the player must gather birch sap, it is said that Aymeric uses it for his tea but only very little. According to the lore, he is known to eat with his knights and prefers to stay near them for both work and rest. After being appointed as a temporary leader, Aymeric still speaks about that he is only meant to lead until someone else is elected in his stead. He sees himself as a humble man only doing his duty and doesn’t mind if he has to step back from the limelight.

”And what strange jest is this that places me at its pinnicle? An archbishop’s bastard at the head of the House of Lords…”

Another sign of his humbleness is the fact that all of his actions are for others more than himself. He never goes for personal gain but someone else’s happiness and safety. He never speaks about himself but more for the people, his friends, his allies, and even the Warrior of Light. In other words, his humbleness and kindness makes him a people person but also a bit of a doormat.

+Leadership”

”Whatever price the dragon asks of me, I shall pay it---such was my oath to defend the people of Ishgard.”

It’s without a doubt that his words make men want to help out most of the time. Aymeric, who is involved with politics, can maneuver around the system in trying to help his cause. During 3.0 in which the Warrior of Light tries to search for Lady Iceheart, Aymeric who is unaware of their plans helps them out by focusing on the defense of the city rather than try to attack the Horde. It is through Aymeric’s words and skills that people start to notice change. Due to his position as Lord Commander, he is able to talk to the Scions and show his countrymen that there is hope. He can speak to a group of many to promote peace without flinching or fear as he does during the peace conference. As a leader, he puts the people up front first and foremost, acting in their best interests but also wanting them to make their own choices when he dissolves the church-like ruling as his last act as Lord Commander.

+/- Idealistic and Determined

Calling Aymeric a cinnamon roll doesn’t do it justice because in all honesty, he’s not. He’s seen wars and bloody battles for a long time even before his service in the military. But it is due to this that he wishes to see Ishgard prosper. After the battle with the primal Shiva, Aymeric expresses that while the nobility in his country are leery of outsiders helping them, he hopes to try and show them through his own position as Lord Commander to try and change their minds about opening the gates to their city. He believes in the people and their ability to make choices instead of just one figure making it for them, including learning truths that were buried over a thousand years ago. When he finds out about King Thordan murdering Nidhogg’s sister and causing the Dragonsong War, he goes to his father to set the records straight. Realizing that he may end up being labeled a heretic, he still goes to try and reason with him. It doesn’t work. Instead, Aymeric is locked in the dungeons and it’s implied that he was tortured due to his walk and mentioned injuries while down there. The same goes for when the true origins of the war are brought to light: instead of uniting the people, it just gets worse with fires all over the city, Aymeric almost losing his life due to a stab wound, and a group loyal to the archbishop decides to take a group hostage.

”Is it godly to spill the blood of an innocent child!? To burn the homes of your brothers!? Tell me, priest---is that godly!?”

While Aymeric hopes for a better future and his ideals are in good nature, they sometimes do not end up going in that direction. The Holy See’s lie about the war’s origins was the only thing keeping order within Ishgard and he along with the Scions and the Warrior of Light decides to blow that out of the water. But with this idealism, Aymeric sees the good in people and which is why he decides to step aside after Nidhogg’s defeat to let them rule instead. Until he gets elected but that’s another story. This also falls under being stubborn as hell: refusing to give up on what he’s fighting for. He’s shown it to his father, the Heavens’ Ward, even to his allies when he says that he would do anything to free his dearest friend from Nidhogg’s influence-including to kill him if there is no choice.

”Come what may, we will never cease to believe. Upon the souls of they who have sacrificed themselves to pave the way for peace, we will never abandon our cause.”

So in summary, Aymeric is the kind of man that some would read in fairy tales. He’s a knight wishing to do well for home and country but also realizes that the system he lives with isn’t working and tries to fix it. He does it not by playing the rules set out by him but instead tries to change it by being humble to both nobility and outsider, realizing that they need to work together. He fights for Ishgard but to make it a better place and to atone for what his ancestors did, hoping to make a better future for the generations after him. He’s a stubborn fool and he knows it. He’s aware of the consequences of his actions and if it happens? So be it. Everything he does is for Ishgard and its people, never himself.

Abilities:

~Leadership: Aymeric was the Lord Commander of the Temple Knights, the military group of the Holy See of Ishgard. Given that title, that means he is in charge of the defense of the city-state and surrounding areas as well. During A Realm Reborn, Aymeric is the representative to speak with Alphinaud and the Scions about keeping an eye on the possible resurrection of the Father of Dragons, Midgardsormr in exchange for keeping goods protected that would be going to Revenant’s Toll, the frontier town where the Scions were stationed. While it doesn’t seem as much, Aymeric can negotiate to get what he wants.

During Heavensward and the patches after, Aymeric is chosen as the de facto leader of Ishgard after the death of Archbishop Thordan and his knights. He is seen making choices that would affect his country and those whom they have fought against, given during 3.1 he sends Lucia to try to make peace with the dragons and he himself goes to lead a charge to save hostages from a group who sees him as a murderer. He can maneuver around politics and understand that sometimes it isn’t the sword that will define a nation but the words and actions of the people and their allies. Following the end of the Dragonsong War, Aymeric denounces the government and replaces it with a republic hoping to step down as Lord Commander. But he ends up getting elected the highest position in the House of Lords.

~Sword and Bow: While lightly touched on within the series, Aymeric has skills of both Gladiator and Archer. He is constantly shown with a large blue sword on his person, showing that he has the skills of a Gladiator, a fighter who deals damage while using a sword and shield. However, Aymeric never uses a shield but it doesn’t make him a weaker fighter. He uses his sword mainly during the hostage situation in the Vault and in the grand melee during 3.2. All the abilities for Gladiator can be seen here. His second class is archer, which is technically his first as he is seen using a bow and arrow during one of the short stories used in Tales of the Dragonsong War, shooting an arrow at a dragon and saving a knight that would be his best friend, Estinien Wyrmblood. He also shows his shooting skills during 3.2 when Nidhogg, possessing Estinien, crashes the conference and he fires an arrow at him. The abilities an archer has are listed here.

Strengths: Humbleness, Kindness, Leadership, Idealism, Determination
Weaknesses: Idealism (double edged sword), Stubborn, Oblivious, Not looking out for self, Taking on too much

God/Shinki: God

Why?: Aymeric is a leader, someone who can rally those to a cause by word and deeds. He seeks not glory but the health and happiness of his people even over himself. He earned the position of Lord Commander despite of being of a humble birth, was the only one who could lead Ishgard after Archbishop Thordan passed on, and was even elected to the highest seat in the House of Lords by his own peers.

Top 3 Choices: Forseti, Honos, Shiva

God Type: Aymeric is a man who tries to help people more than harm. He’s the type to hear a prayer and go try to fulfill it the best he can. While he led mainly from his office and within the ‘safety’ of Ishgard, given that gods and shinkis do well fighting together, he’s the type that would venture out and do the deed. He’s been shown in canon to desire lending his swordarm to Estinien and the Warrior of Light to face Nidhogg but Estinien pretty much told him to stay put.

But the question remains: will Aymeric change since becoming a god? In the super bad way that tells folks to fuck off? Not in the slightest. The main reason because he will worry about becoming the same way his father was when given a taste of power usually reserved for primals, even going to call himself a ‘god-king’. That’s enough motivation for Aymeric to try his best and not make the same mistakes others before him did. He’s basically the kind of person who will help more than sit around and let others do the job for him.

A god? Him?

Most would be jumping at the opportunity, knowing of the stories of divine beings and all the powers they possess, mostly immortality. Aymeric on the other hand was unsure why they chose someone like himself for such a task; he knew more than likely due to his leadership skills and how he handled matters within a crisis but there was something in the back of his mind, gnawing away at his uncertainty like one of the many dragonflies circling outside of Ishgard's gates. It was something he would not share with anyone here but hearing the words 'god' and his name made him think of his father. The Warrior of Light mentioned that Thordan called himself a god-king and Aymeric could not help but wonder as he sipped his warm tea: would he be as corrupted? Is it possible that he too will get a taste of power and become consumed by the temptation?

'Calm down.' He told himself mentally, feeling his hands shake as the teacup replied in kind with its own delicate clinks. 'You have already showed them how capable you are for the position and both positives and negatives of it.'

Taking a few deep breaths, Aymeric raised the cup to his lips and let the liquid run down his throat. Tea always seemed to be something he used to relax and this was no exception. If he were keep this, he would need to do just the same as ruling his country but on a more grander scale. He just needed to not lose sight of who he was before: a man from humble origins who managed to pull a country out of the shackles of a thousand year battle.

"Well then...I should take a look at the requests for the day." his voice much more pleasant than his mind. "I cannot let those who have faith in me down." Aymeric rose from his seat and began to walk away, replacing his doubtful thoughts aside to focus on what he can do at the moment.
